Complete Dose of Corona Vaccine vs Delta Variant, Who Wins? This is the research

Good news, a study in Singapore found evidence of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccination providing 69 percent protection against infection with the Delta variant. Research from Singapore's National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID) and the local Ministry of Health shows full-dose COVID-19 vaccination also prevents symptomatic COVID-19 cases by 80 to 90 percent.

"The effectiveness of vaccination against severe COVID-19 disease, requiring oxygen supplementation, ICU (intensive care unit) treatment or death, is 93 percent," he added.

The conclusion of the study is based on COVID-19 cases in 1,000 households from September 2020 to May 2021. "These findings will be submitted for international publication, and represent Singapore's contribution to understanding the Delta variant and vaccine," said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung.

Meanwhile, among local Corona cases recorded since April 11, only about 1 percent of those vaccinated against COVID-19 were fully exposed to Corona and required oxygen, not a single case was treated in the intensive care room (ICU).

"Compared to unvaccinated cases who develop severe disease, the percentage is 10 percent."

Director of medical services at the Singapore Ministry of Health Kenneth Mak said the majority of those who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 were exposed to the Delta variant with only mild or no symptoms.

"Those currently in the ICU are unvaccinated cases, he added.

How many citizens in Singapore have been vaccinated against Corona?

Around two-thirds of Singaporeans have already received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. At least half of the population is expected to finish receiving the second dose of COVID-19 vaccination by the end of July 2021.

"In the coming days, or one to two weeks, we will meet our first dose coverage, which means our goal to provide good protection to as many people as possible, that goal will be achieved," explained the Minister of Health.

"So we must now urge individuals to get their second dose of the Corona vaccine early, so that the interval between the first and second doses is four weeks instead of six to eight weeks. We are no longer constrained by supply, in fact we have the capacity to deliver more dose of the COVID-19 vaccine."

Singapore's complete Corona vaccination coverage reaches 39 percent

Under the national vaccination programme, Singapore uses the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine and the Corona Moderna vaccine, approximately 5.9 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. About 2.1 million people or 39 percent of Singapore's population have received two doses.

On average, Singapore vaccinates around 76,000 people per day.

"Our total capacity is 80,000 or so, so actually we have the capacity to vaccinate more, so we need more people to come forward to be vaccinated immediately," Ong said.

He also provided a breakdown by age group who had received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as follows.

• 70 years and over: 71 percent
• 60 to 69 years: 85 percent
• 50 to 59 years: 86 percent
• 40 to 49 years: 86 percent
• 30 to 39 years: 78 percent
• 20 to 29 years: 80 percent
• 12 to 19 years: 80 percent

"I think we can realistically expect our population to eventually reach this vaccination rate, around 80 percent or more, if all these numbers are reached. Once it reaches 50 percent, it's time we have a more definitive roadmap for transit to endemic COVID-19, "said Minister of Health Ong.
