Of all the non-communicable diseases that cause death globally, diabetes is one of the top four diseases and causes the death of 1.5 million people worldwide. In 2019, approximately 463 million adults (20-79 years) were living with diabetes and this is expected to increase to 700 million by 2045..

One of the problems in controlling diabetes in developing countries, including Indonesia, is that patients are often detected at an advanced stage and already have complications. As a result, treatment becomes more difficult and the mortality rate is high.

Society Must Aware and understand what diabetes is

Early detection of diabetes can be done in primary health services, whether it is a health center or a clinic. One of the main programs in The National Health Strategic Plan is mentransformation and strengthen the role of health services primer.

So far, people have come to primary service centers such as Puskesmas only for treatment. Even though the public can also use it for regular health checks. For example, blood sugar checks in order to detect diabetes early. That way cases of diabetes can be detected early, when the symptoms have not been felt, let alone the complications.

Primary care centers should also be a means public education, primary prevention (diabetes prevention), secondary prevention (complication prevention result diabetes), and improve service capacity and capability health primer.

Furthermore, Anand explained that program Early Diagnosis (Early Diagnosis) will focus improve understanding society against diabetes. Early detection is expected to reduce the burden of diabetes care.

Early Case Findings Can Save Handling Costs

The IDF Diabetes Atlas states that there are 10.7 million people with diabetes in Indonesia and this figure is expected to continue to increase to 16.6 million by 2045. On the other hand, in 2020, BPJS data shows that only two million people with diabetes will have diabetes. have received treatment in the National Health Insurance (JKN).

Of the total number of people with diabetes, only 1.2 percent managed to lower their blood glucose to the recommended level. In fact, it is very important for people with diabetes to achieve blood glucose targets so that they can avoid complications.

According to data published by CHEPS FKM UI and PERKENI in 2016, the government spent 74 percent from diabetes treatment costs to managing complications that arise from diabetes. This confirms that only a small number of people with diabetes manage to lower their blood sugar to the recommended target.

“It is very important to act now, to help people with diabetes find the disease early so they can control their blood sugar and reduce diabetes complications,” said Anand.

In his remarks, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin welcomed the MoU for Health Sector RI-Denmark and hoped that the MoU could be useful for both countries in an effort to improve health status. In line with the Indonesian Minister of Health, the Danish Minister of Health also welcomed the MoU and was ready to support Indonesia in its efforts to strengthen the health sector.
