Isoman COVID-19 Patient's Oxygen Saturation Level Decreases, What Should You Do?
Jakarta -
Oxygen saturation levels are one of the most important conditions to monitor, especially in COVID-19 patients who are undergoing self-isolation (isoman). The reason is, oxygen saturation is one of the parameters to determine whether or not oxygen supplementation is needed in addition to the emergence of symptoms of shortness of breath.
In isoman COVID-19 patients, oxygen saturation can be measured using an oximeter. General chairman of the Indonesian Lung Doctors Association (PDPI), Dr. Agus Dwi Susanto, SpP(K), FISR, FAPSR explained, oxygen supplementation can be given if the oxygen saturation is less than or equal to 93 percent.
"If it's less than 93 percent, oxygen supplementation should be given. The method of administration varies. Some are oxygen cylinders, some are masks, some are high pressure like a ventilator. It depends on the degree of oxygen deficiency," he explained to detik.com, Tuesday (6/7/2021). ).
"The method of giving oxygen cylinders is only at home if possible as first aid can be done at home, but immediately go to the hospital. In this COVID case, (if) the patient already needs oxygen, it means he has a severe degree. This patient cannot be treated at home, " he continued.
What is the first step to take if a COVID-19 patient's oxygen saturation level is below 93 percent?
dr Agus explained, lack of oxygen is caused by lung damage which causes impaired oxygen exchange function. Overcoming these conditions, it is necessary to improve oxygenation to add oxygen from the outside. What's more, air only contains about 21 percent oxygen.
As a first aid measure, the proning position can be tried. If the body is in a supine position, lung function in the back (back) is not optimal due to pressure on the back. With the proning position, the lungs at the back can work more optimally, oxygenation also increases.
"The first and most important thing is the addition of oxygen. Second, it is permissible to do prone, it must be done simultaneously so that people do not mistake that the prone position can improve saturation. Prone position must be accompanied by oxygen supplementation," explained Dr. Agus.
Here's the order of things to do if the oxygen saturation level is below 93 percent:
- Don't panic
- Take a good breath
- Try prone position
- Give oxygen if available
- Check saturation again
- If it is still low, go to the hospital immediately
