Know the Types of Cancer Recurrence and Treatment

Cancer that recurs can come back in the same place. If the cancer is found again after you have been treated for one type of cancer, tests will be done to see if it is the same type or a new type (second cancer).

According to the American Cancer Society, the types of cancer recurrence include:

1. Local Recurrence

Cancer has returned to the same place it first appeared.

2. Regional Recurrence

Cancer cells appear in the lymph nodes near the site where the cancer first appeared.

3. Distant Recurrence

Distant recurrence or distant recurrence means the cancer is back in another part of the body. The location is a bit far from where it first appeared. Often, the cancer is in the lungs, liver, bones, or brain.

In order to better understand the condition of cancer recurrence, there are several other terms that need to be known. Reported from Very Well Health, here are the details:

  Remission: In this condition, the cancer is declared "disappeared", not cured.

There are two types of remission. Complete remission means the cancer is not detected through physical examination, imaging (imaging), or laboratory tests. Meanwhile, partial remission means that the cancer can still be detected but its size is smaller.

• 
  Metastatic disease: Refers to the spread of cancer cells from their original location to other parts.


• 
  Progression: The cancer gets worse or has spread after treatment. Many oncologists believe that cancer that recurs within 3 months is a progression, not a recurrence.


• 
  Partial response: The tumor is reduced by at least 30 percent of its size, then still detectable and has not completely disappeared. This condition is also called partial regression.


• 
  Stable disease (static): The tumor has not changed much. It can also mean that there is no new tumor and it has not spread to other parts.
